History Made in Oakland: Honoring Mayor Barbara Lee and a Legacy in the Making
Oakland made history again.
We are proud to celebrate a powerful moment in our city’s story: the election of Barbara Lee as the first Black woman Mayor of Oakland. A longtime public servant, advocate, and voice for justice, Mayor Lee’s leadership marks a bold and inspiring new chapter for a city that has long been at the heart of cultural change and political activism.
This isn’t just a win for representation it’s a win for the people of Oakland.
A Moment of Connection at the Black Cultural Zone
Mayor Lee didn’t waste any time showing what true leadership looks like. In one of her first community appearances, she visited the Black Cultural Zone, a vital space that has long nurtured art, activism, and healing in East Oakland.
Rather than simply giving a speech or posing for photos, Mayor Lee did something different—she rolled up her sleeves, picked up a brush, and joined the community in painting a mural. It was a powerful and symbolic act that said: I’m not just here to lead—I’m here to build, with you.
🎨🤝 Art and action go hand in hand when communities are at the center.
Why This Matters
Barbara Lee’s historic leadership isn’t just about breaking barriers. It’s about building bridges. Her presence in spaces like the Black Cultural Zone reminds us that political power must stay rooted in community care.
At a time when many cities are struggling with division, Mayor Lee is reminding Oakland of its strength: unity, culture, and collective action.
Her legacy—already decades in the making as a congresswoman and activist—now continues at the city level, where real, daily change happens. And with this new role, Oakland gets to write a new story—one led by a Black woman whose life has been dedicated to justice, equity, and progress.
A Thank You to the People
We extend deep gratitude to Mayor Lee for showing up with love, humility, and action. Your presence in the community means more than words can express.
And to the Black Cultural Zone—thank you for always holding space for the people, for lifting up local voices, and for reminding us that our culture is our power.
Let’s Keep Building
This moment isn’t just about a new mayor. It’s about a renewed commitment to uplifting Oakland from the ground up. Through art, policy, and people-first leadership, we’re ready to build a future where every resident feels seen, supported, and empowered.
History has been made—but the work continues.
Let’s build. Let’s uplift. Let’s make Oakland great—together. 🖤💛
